The Outsiders, SE Hinton’s classic novel about a gang of boys growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, still attracts the 12-14 year old a half century after it was written. There are many masterful works that I could read with my students, but I keep returning to a 50-year-old novel, written by a first time author when she was only fifteen.Īre you with me? If you teach middle school English, you probably are. I teach one classroom novel a year and finding a book with wide appeal – one that will be adored by girls, boys, reluctant readers and dystopian devotees – is no small feat. Laurie Lichtenstein, a middle school English and Social Studies teacher in the northern suburbs of New York City, reflects on the book’s half-century hold on the adolescent mind and heart. Hinton (Susan Eloise) was a high school student when it appeared, and teens and tweens surely account for much of the book’s 15+ million in estimated sales. The Outsiders (published April 24, 1967) had its 50th anniversary in 2017. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We don't allow personal recommendation posts. The story follows Vanessa, a woman who can’t wait to quit her job. We only get the heroine’s perspective, but I really felt like I knew (and loved) our hero by the end – he’s such an interesting character, and he certainly had me swooning once he got his head out of his… you know. It just felt so incredibly romantic, and my heart was bursting at the seams. If you look at the contrasts between their relationship at the start of the book and where they end up by the final page, the emotional payoff is definitely there. I loved that build in intimacy, the steps that this couple takes along the way. I finally took the plunge, and this absolutely lives up to the hype – I ADORED it! Ian tasted of the ocean and of the promise of Taren’s new life. Taren flicked his tail to propel him around so that he and Ian swam toward each other, arms extended, then moved upward as they laced their fingers together and floated perpendicular to the sea floor. Here, many feet below the surface, the pressure of the water created a warm cocoon around Taren and drove the warmth in his chest to his extremities, making his fingers more sensitive. ![]() ![]() Large schools of silver fish followed the contours of their bodies, calling to mind the shimmer of moon across the waves. Ian released Taren as they glided over the sand at the bottom. More thrilling, perhaps, was the knowledge that Ian was his, that Ian desired him above all others, that Taren held Ian’s heart. Taren loved to watch Ian swim, watch the sinews of his body ripple as he moved his tail, watch his hair twist in the current. As an Ea, he possessed strength and surprising grace few others did. In this form, Ian’s chest was broad and the muscles of his belly and arms more powerful. More than anything, Taren found the Ea mating ritual a beautiful thing. ![]() They swam out from land as they held each other, tails beating the water in tandem as they spiraled in a dizzying dance. ![]() ![]() ![]() Madison, 1803), and the protection of federal institutions from state interference ( McCulloch v. ![]() Woodward, 1819), the supremacy of the federal judiciary ( Marbury v.
